You Built a Life Prompt. Now What?
Where to put your life prompt so AI actually remembers who you are.
January 2026
You answered the questions. You have a beautiful document that explains who you are, how you think, and what you need from AI. Now what?
If you just paste it at the start of every conversation, that works — but there's a better way. Each major AI platform has a place where you can save this information permanently, so the AI remembers you every time.
Let me show you where to put it in each one.
ChatGPT: Custom Instructions
ChatGPT has a feature called Custom Instructions that applies to every conversation automatically.
Step 1: Click your profile picture in the bottom-left corner
Step 2: Select "Customize ChatGPT" (or "Settings" → "Personalization")
Step 3: You'll see two boxes:
- • "What would you like ChatGPT to know about you?"
- • "How would you like ChatGPT to respond?"
Step 4: Paste the relevant parts of your life prompt into each box
Step 5: Click "Save"
Tip: ChatGPT has a character limit. Put your most important preferences in "How would you like ChatGPT to respond?" — that's what shapes the conversation most.
How long does it last? Forever, until you change it. Every new conversation will use these instructions automatically.
Claude: Projects
Claude uses "Projects" to store context. You can create a project and add your life prompt to the project instructions.
Step 1: Go to claude.ai and click "Projects" in the left sidebar
Step 2: Click "Create Project" and name it something like "Personal Assistant"
Step 3: Click on your new project, then click "Project Instructions" (or the gear icon)
Step 4: Paste your entire life prompt into the instructions field
Step 5: Save and start chatting within that project
Tip: You can create multiple projects with different life prompts — one for work, one for personal, one for a specific hobby. Claude will adapt to each context.
How long does it last? As long as you're chatting within that project. Start a new chat in the same project and it still remembers.
Gemini: Gems
Google's Gemini uses "Gems" — custom AI assistants you can create with specific instructions.
Step 1: Go to gemini.google.com
Step 2: Click "Gem manager" in the left sidebar
Step 3: Click "New Gem"
Step 4: Name it (like "My Assistant") and paste your life prompt in the instructions
Step 5: Save and use that Gem whenever you want personalized responses
How long does it last? Whenever you chat with that specific Gem. Regular Gemini chats won't have your life prompt unless you use your custom Gem.
Quick Reference
| Platform | Where to Put It | Scope |

Before my life prompt, every AI conversation started from scratch. I had to explain my communication preferences, my projects, my family situation — every single time.
Now? The AI just knows. It responds the way I want. It asks the right questions. It doesn't waste my time explaining things I already understand.
It's the difference between talking to a stranger and talking to someone who's been briefed on who you are.
AI adapts to you — if you give it the chance.
